Is your child complaining of aching joints at odd times? It is easy to put this down to them being tired or hurt themselves while playing. However, it is possible that your child might be showing early signs of arthritis. If your child complains about joint pain right after waking up in the morning, it might require your attention.

Children with juvenile arthritis may show symptoms of joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the morning, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Other signs could include persistent eye redness, pain or inflammation of iris.

According to KidsHealth, no one knows what causes juvenile arthritis. Children might carry it in their genes and environmental viruses may trigger it, but it is not contagious. Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. It is triggered when the body’s immune system makes a mistake and attacks your own tissues or healthy cells.

Exercising and joint mobility on a daily basis is very important for your child. Let them run, jump, climb and play. The only thing you need to do is make sure that they do not strain their joints. This can result in more pain.

There should always a balance between activity and rest in kids. As we are well aware, kids get tired easily but wouldn’t realise it themselves because they are having fun. It is your responsibility to make sure that the balance is maintained.

A must do activity for your kids is swimming.

We emphasise this because studies by a kid’s health organisation found that swimming stretches a lot of different muscles and tendons, which keeps children flexible and reduces pain and joint stiffness.

As mentioned in our earlier blog, ‘Pay attention to your children’, we mention that symptoms of arthritis can often be seen in morning. This can be hard for both your child and you. No parent wants to see their child wake up in pain.

Stiffness and joint pain increases after sleep because of the immobility of the joint during the night. To provide some pain relief the solution is to keep the joints warm. Have your child wear footed pyjamas or use an electric blanket to keep their joints warm throughout the night.

Medication that reduces inflammation should be used in their regular diet and is taken ideally with morning breakfast.
